Veilederkonferansen 2026
What’s the point of supervision? From ritual to real impact?

Supervision is central to the development, effectiveness and sustainability of cognitive behavioural therapy, but it can sometimes drift into routine, compliance, or over-support at the expense of clinical impact. This interactive workshop is designed for CBT supervisors who want to sharpen their practice and maximise the difference supervision makes to therapy outcomes.
The workshop will revisit the core purpose of supervision, distinguishing clearly between clinical, professional and managerial functions, with a primary focus on high-quality clinical supervision. Participants will explore key principles of effective CBT supervision, including how to balance fidelity to evidence-based models with the flexibility required in real-world practice. The parallels between therapy and supervision will be made explicit, supporting supervisors to use familiar CBT skills, such as formulation, guided discovery and behavioural methods, within supervision itself.
Common challenges will be addressed, including supervising therapists who are struggling, identifying drift versus adaptive flexibility, and working across professional and cultural differences. The workshop will also introduce the role of supervision of supervision (meta-supervision) in maintaining and developing supervisory competence over time.
Through a combination of reflection, discussion and practical exercises, participants will have the opportunity to review their own supervisory style and identify concrete ways to enhance impact. The overall aim is to support supervisors to move beyond ritual and towards supervision that is purposeful, responsive and clinically effective.
